As Trump Takes Office, Impact on Psychedelics Field Remains Unclear

Psychedelics Advocate Sergey Brin Bags Seat in Billionaire’s Gallery

Google co-founder Sergey Brin was given a prominent spot on the seating arrangement for Trump’s inauguration on Monday. He was sat among fellow billionaires and tech execs, perched beside Apple CEO Tim Cook.

While the view of Brin was often obscured by Trump’s towering son, Barron, viewers could see him join in with various standing ovations, such as when the incoming president announced that he was declaring a national emergency at the southern border and his “Drill, Baby, Drill!” proclamation1.

With execs lining up to kiss the ring, presumably in exchange for shelter from Trump’s slew of tariffs or some other benefit, it’s unclear why Brin is in Trump’s orbit or what he might be hoping to achieve. If Musk is after a contract to take us to Mars via SpaceX, is Sergey hoping to take us on an oneiric voyage via Soneira’s ibogaine?

Brin is, of course, no stranger to psychedelics, having been a long-time Burning Man attendee, often alongside his Google co-founder Larry Page. More recently, he ploughed $15 million into an ibogaine drug development startup Soneira Bio, which appears to be leveraging the work of Stanford researcher Nolan Williams—who is rumoured to be under consideration for a position in the second Trump administration.
